When SYR Swag learned about West Genesee Central School District’s Unity Day campaign we knew this was a project we wanted to get involved in. With assistance from a friend and district elementary parent, SYR Swag owner Necole Carpenter connected with the West Genesee PTA/PTO District Council who sponsored the district-wide Unity campaign.

Unity Day, Friday, May 20, 2022, was earmarked as the day to celebrate diversity, equity, and inclusion for all students across the district.

SYR Swag was thrilled to be selected as the t-shirt vendor for the campaign.

Together with the PTA Council leaders, a simple, yet compelling design was created for the shirts, consisting of strong statement words cohesive to the unity message. The shirt was designed in the district colors of navy and gold.

To simplify the ordering process, SYR Swag developed an online ordering page for students, staff, and families across the district to place orders. The page was communicated via email, in local Facebook groups, and on the district’s website to promote Unity Day and the t-shirts.

To further support the spirit of inclusion anyone purchasing a shirt could also purchase an additional shirt as a donation to a WGCSD student in need. The PTA’s goal was to outfit as many students as possible in a Unity Day shirt, with an anticipated 100 shirts provided from donations. The WGCSD nor PTA made any profit from the sale of the t-shirts.

Local businesses step up

To meet the targeted number of donated shirts to expand the reach to even more students, we contacted several local small businesses in Camillus to engage their support. Through the monetary donations from Charlee’s Ice Cream, Elite Personal Fitness, TK Tavern, Warrior Factory Syracuse, and Wildcat Pub, and an additional donation by SYR Swag, 119 extra t-shirts were printed and donated for students to wear on Unity Day. Standing together in unity is a community-wide ambition and we were grateful for the support of the project from these local businesses.

In all, more than 700 Unity Day shirts were printed, and in most cases, were delivered directly to the students in their classrooms ahead of Unity Day.

Heidi White-McCormick, West Genesee PTA/PTO District Council Board member, shared this about her experience coordinating the t-shirts with SYR Swag, “Thank you for all that you did to support Wildcat Unity Day. It was an absolute pleasure working with you. You were incredibly professional, kind, and prompt. You have my glowing recommendation with all PTA leaders at West Genesee. You are a true community leader and partner.”

As a small woman-owned business and parent of an East Hill Elementary student, SYR Swag is extremely proud to be included in a campaign that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion for all.

“Seeing the community come together to support the District and every student made this a truly special project for SYR Swag. This is what SYR Swag is all about… community, kindness, and love. We’re excited to continue working with WGCSD,” Necole Carpenter, Owner, SYR Swag.
